Timber Frame Construction

An ancient building style, timber framing utilizes beautiful large timbers and handcrafted joinery to produce dramatic homes. The frame of a timber frame (also called post and beam) home is constructed of heavy timbers fastened together using traditional mortise and tenon joinery and wooden pegs.

Inside the structure, the beams are fully exposed, giving the home warmth, stability and the comfortable atmosphere often associated with wood. Since interior walls are typically not load bearing, the design possibilities are endless. Structured Insulated Panels (SIPS) have become widely used as an alternative construction material, particularly in timber frame construction. SIPS generally refers to panels made from a thick layer of foam (often expanded polyurethane) sandwiched between two layers of Oriented Strand Board (OSB) or plywood. It provides sturdy structural framing, insulation, and exterior sheathing in a solid, one-piece component. SIPS allows builders to construct an exterior building envelope that is airtight, strong, and energy efficient. They provide superior insulating capacity (R value) and have the ability to handle excessive winds. Timber framing is used for homes of all sizes, but particularly lends itself to large spaces and cathedral style ceilings.

"After two years of unsuccessfully trying to line up contractors to build our cabin we came upon Steve Jensen. He is a quality craftsman that can and will get the job done. We highly recommend Steve and Mountain Top Builders."
